Penetrating the material emotionally, psychologically, intuitively and analytically. Three act structure, story arcs, outlining. The Universe of the script, characters, relationships. Dialogue. Writers enter with an idea and leave with Act 1 written in its entirety.
Narrative structure, story telling, seeing and hearing narrative. Colors, the visual element. Conflicts, obstacles, character’s journey. Clarity of vision. Tone, mood. Climax. Tools and technology. Ways into the scene including improving with actors. Writers outline and write Act 2 in its entirety.
Opening class, followed by three 30 minute private sessions with Harrison James and Claire Gerety-Mott during which the writers outline and complete Act 3, and take their scripts through a second pass based on work done in the private sessions.
“I have never completed a screenplay and now I have 95
pages and still going. This has been one of the most
inspiring classes of my life.”
“The Write of Way lab forced me to focus and get through
the work. It was good to be around other writers. It gave
me the tools to help me grow in craft such as learning
about emotional arcs which I had not thought about before.”
“I liked the practical approach to screenwriting, which I
feel confident about setting out on my own, away from the
lab, and continuing to develop as a writer. I got an
understanding of process, and I liked the intimacy of the
group and reading/hearing other people’s writing. Harrison
and Claire are professional, passionate and nurturing”.
“I completely feel as though I now have a solid foundation
for taking an idea and constructing a framework. I really
appreciate the ‘freedom to stumble’ I have felt week in and
week out. Thanks for helping me to diminish my critical
voice and encourage my creative voice.”
“Harrison and Claire have the ability to make you feel like
you can do anything. They are inspiring and bring you up
when you are feeling like you couldn’t possibly write
another page. They made me feel like I could accomplish
anything. I now have a finished draft that I can go out
with.”
